Botanical Name: Cymbopogon Martinii

Cymbopogon is from two Greek words meaning “boat” and “beard” referring to the large bract enclosing the flower spike. Palmarosa is native to South East Asia, particularly India but is now steamed distilled here in Northern Queensland, Australia.

Geraniol makes up for 80 – 95% of Palmarosa’s content and Geranyl Acetate derives from Geraniol. These constituents are great as a repellent against bugs, mosquitos, ticks and dust mites. They can even kill tiny parasitic worms found in fish. They can fight against bacteria and fungi. These compounds help stimulate cell growth and promote healing which can be effective for scars and to help fight free-radicals and balance dry, oily skin, also having inflammatory properties for the body.

Palmarosa also contains Linalool. Linalool is known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety by calming the nerves also boosting the immune. It improves sleep quality leading to more energy the following day. It can reduce pain and ease inflammation lowering responses to injury or sickness. It is also know as an anticonvulsant. Linalool deters mosquitoes.

Botanical Name: Pogostemon Cablin

An Earthy strong, woody, wine scent (native to the Philippines) mainly produced in Indonesia by steam distillation from the leaves of the Pogostemon Cablin, a species of the mint family that dates back centuries but was commonly used in the 1960’s and 1970’s by the hippy counterculture. One of the most well known uses of the Patchouli plant was protection from bed bugs and moths. The leaves were placed in shipments of Indian cashmere rugs, destined to England for protection from moth damage. Ultimately, the cashmere shawls became known for the distinctive patchouli fragrance.

Constituents of Essential Oil: patchoulol, g-guaiene, a-guaiene, saychellene, a-humulene, b-patchoulene, b-caryophyllene, aciphyllene, g-patchoulene, pogostol

Patchoulol or Patchouli alcohol makes up to approximately 30 – 40% of Patchouli EO and is responsible for its distinct aroma used extensively in the perfume industry. Morden studies have revealed activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor and antimicrobial, antiplatelet and aphrodisiac. Patchoulol is also used in the synthesis of the chemotherapy drug Taxol.

Although the constituents of Patchouli Oil have not been widely studied separately, the constituents of Patchouli Oil as a whole have. Patchouli Oil constituents widely vary from plant to plant, area grown and time of harvest.

Pogostemon Cablin was studied for antibacterial and antifungal activity and was found effective in inhibiting 20 bacterial strains and all 12 fungi. One study was also found of antimicrobial activity, pogostone and patchoulol had broader therapeutic prospects in bacteria infection. Patchouli Oil was also effective in preventing biofilm formation. Anti-viral activities of Pogostemon Cablin were shown to inhibit influenza A virus but more human studdies have to be done.

Studies have also shown Patchouli Oil helps to overcome defaecation and constipation by olfactory neurotransmission systems and may assist with fibrinolysis (prevents blood clots from growing) and many neurodegenerative disorders.

Patchouli Oil showed an efficient free radical scavenging activity and prevented photoaging by exhibiting antioxidative properties and maintained skin structural integrity caused by UV irradiation with anti-inflammatory activities also observed. The healing duration was considerably reduced in patients suffering ulcers, torn skin, skin abrasions and pressure sores using 12% Patchouli Oil concentration. It also effectively controlled skin infections and odour. Patchouli Oil is also an effective repellent against the mosquito, termites, dust mites, ants amongst many others.

In Aromatherapy, Patchouli Oil helps to sharpen intelligence, improve concentration and provide insight, reduce tension and anxiety. Its wine-like intoxicating aroma functions as an aphrodisiac and is used to treat symptoms of menopause for a harmonious flow of energy that interacts with thyroid glands and balances hormones. Mental alertness and awareness is improved therefore an oil great for meditation.

TEA TREE OIL Aromatherapy Essential “Oil of the Month”

Australian Tea Tree

Botanical Name: Melaleuca alternifolia

A Native to Australia is the Tea Tree. There are over 300 species belonging to the Myrtle family and are also known as paperbarks and honey myrtles. Tea Tree has a papery bark and white to creamish bottlebrush-like flowers up to 5cm long, flowering in October to November. They are farmed in regions of the North Coast of New South Wales and on the Atherton Tableland in Queensland.

The leaves are steam distilled, harvested in the warmer months with very high Australian standards and code of practice producing a high quality, consistent product that is compliant with international standards.

Tea Tree lakes stained by the leaves dropping into the water have a dark appearance but are said to be great for the skin to heal wounds and revitalise.

New uses for Tea Tree Oil are being considered and these include insect pest control in sheep and cattle industries.

Main Constituents of Essential Oil: Terpinen-4-ol, y-terpinene, a-terpinene, Terpinolene, a-terpineol, a-pinene, p-cymene, 1,8-cinole

There is up to 15 constituents in Tee Tree oil but the main ones are Terpinen-4-ol with approximately 41.33% in Tea Tree Oil and has shown to have antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and insecticidal effects as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. There are also reports of antitumor effects by apoptosis (cell death). Although more research is needed, Terpinen-4-ol is an important constituent of Tea Tree Oil.

Y-terpinene 20% in Tea Tree Oil along with a-terpinene 10% in Tea Tree Oil has strong antioxidant activity. A-terpinene also is said to contribute to the antitumor properties of Tea Tree Oil. Terpinolene contributes to the antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant properties also improving sleep quality. Terpinolene only makes up 3 – 4% of Tea Tree Oil but is found in Cannabis Oil at 20%.

Although Tea Tree Oil is low skin irritant (always dilute Essential Oils) it is poisonous if swallowed so keeping it away from the mouth area is recommended.

Tea Tree Oil has a green woody, medicinal scent and is known as a middle note being Australia’s SUMMER SNOW!
